APA social media community standards

APA’s social media channels are spaces for our community to learn, share, and discuss psychological science together. These standards describe the kinds of participation we welcome and the kinds of content we may remove. They apply across all APA-managed social media channels.

What we welcome

We welcome thoughtful discussion, questions, disagreement, and perspectives grounded in personal or professional experience. Our channels are stronger when people engage honestly with psychological science and with one another, including when they challenge ideas or share views that differ from ours. Critical comments about APA, our positions, or our work are part of healthy dialogue and are welcome here.

What we may remove

We may remove content that is inconsistent with these standards, including:

  • Hate speech, harmful, and discriminatory content targeting people based on race, ethnicity, national origin, religion, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, disability, age, or other protected characteristics.
  • Threats, incitement, or calls for harm directed at any individual or group.
  • Harassment, bullying, or personal attacks, including sustained targeting of an individual.
  • Content that endangers others, including doxxing, sharing private information without consent, and content promoting suicide or self-harm.
  • Dangerous health misinformation, including claims that could cause harm if acted upon or that discourage people from seeking care from licensed professionals.
  • Spam, off-topic promotion, and coordinated inauthentic activity.
  • Content that violates intellectual property rights, including unauthorized reproduction of APA publications or test materials.
  • Illegal content, including child sexual abuse material, which we report to the appropriate authorities.

How we moderate

Comments appear publicly before we review them. Their presence does not mean APA endorses, approves, or agrees with them. Comments reflect the views of the people, organizations, or accounts that post them.

We review content as staff availability permits and apply these standards at our discretion. We can’t guarantee that every comment will be reviewed or that any particular comment will be reviewed within a specific timeframe. Repeated violations may result in a user being restricted or blocked from our channels.

Reporting content

If you see something you believe warrants our attention, please report it using the platform’s built-in reporting tools. Reports from our community help us identify content we might otherwise miss.

These standards may be updated periodically. Thank you for being part of the conversation.
