Update on CoA decisions and program counts

The Commission on Accreditation (CoA) held its summer program review meeting July 16-19, 2015, in Washington, D.C. During this meeting, CoA:

• Reviewed 65 programs for either initial or continued accreditation.
• Voted to accredit 17 new programs. 
• Approved site visits for six applicant programs.
• Recognized one program’s declaration of “eligibility.”

Decisions made at the meeting are available on the Office of Program Consultation website. Complete listings of accredited and applicant programs were updated on Aug. 18, 2015, to reflect the actions taken at the July meeting.

CoA has awarded “accredited, on contingency” status to 13 programs and recognized the declaration of “eligibility” for four programs. Given the growing number of programs, it is important to highlight the main difference between “accredited, on contingency” and “eligible.” Interns/residents who complete a program that is “accredited, on contingency” will have completed an APA-accredited program. Recognition of a program’s “eligible” declaration is not an official accredited status. As such, interns/residents who complete a program that is recognized as “eligible” at time of completion have not completed an APA accredited program.

CoA also approved language for a letter (PDF, 84KB) to the public in response to the Hoffman Report. This letter was circulated in July 2015.
