Respecialization in psychology refers to the process by which individuals already holding a doctoral degree in psychology complete additional education and training in order to change their specialist area of study. Respecialization programs typically involve intensive coursework in a health service psychology field (Clinical, Counseling, School or combinations of these areas), that includes education in relevant profession wide competencies (e.g., ethics, assessment, intervention), experiential education (i.e. practicum) and a one-year internship. Upon successful completion of the respecialization program, a certificate is awarded. In some, but not all, states, a respecialization certificate holder may be eligible to sit for licensure as a psychologist. Those interested in respecialization are advised to consult with the relevant state licensing board to determine licensure eligibility.
Qualifications for acceptance into a respecialization program, the curricula that is required for successful completion, the presence of financial aid and tuition costs are determined by each program offering respecialization education. Please direct inquiries to the graduate program in which you are interested.
The APA Council of Representatives Policy Manual details the association policies on encouraging respecialization training programs and on psychology programs and departments that offer respecialization programs.
