Education and professional experience

I have been teaching for 22 years and I have been teaching AP psychology for 10 years. I received my master’s degree in educational counseling in 2005, and did not discover my love for teaching psychology until I started teaching AP psychology in 2014. In 2022, I set my sights on a graduate certificate in human development and learning at Northern Arizona University, which I completed in December 2023, with a 4.0. I will begin teaching dual enrollment psychology this fall at Arcadia High School, aiming to teach psychology at the community college level.

Personal statement

My name is Darcy Brodison, and I am seeking nomination for the TOPSS Committee member-at-large position. I have been involved with Arizona Teachers of Psychology (ATOP) since 2014, and I have attended every annual conference since. I enjoy learning from other educators as they share their best practices for teaching psychology, and I have implemented many of them into my classroom. For the past two years, I have been on the committee that organizes the annual ATOP conference. These events are critical in the state because they bring teachers together to share ideas, network, and hear from keynote speakers. Our last conference encompassed the theme of psychology as a science. For this conference, we worked to bring two ASU Professors to speak about their research in two very different areas of psychology. Providing professional development and linkages among different teaching levels of psychology is important to me, and has inspired me to take those passions beyond the classroom. I am the advisor to the Bring Change to Mind (BC2M) club at Arcadia and have been since 2018. This club focuses on mental health in general, and increasing the knowledge of mental health resources for themselves, their families, and their classmates. The things that I have been doing are aligned with the mission of TOPSS and APA’s strategic plan. My next step is to bring my enthusiasm and skills to the TOPSS committee. I feel I would be an asset to this committee because, throughout my career, I have worked with and taught a diverse group of individuals. I am not done making my impact on this world. When I do something I go all in, which is what I plan to do as a member-at-large for TOPSS.
