Working to Improve Pre-K to 12 Teaching and Education
Projects and priorities underway for the Center of Psychology in Schools and Education and its affiliated coalition.
Ongoing Projects
The Center for Psychology in Schools and Education is creating several high-quality resources that will facilitate the application of psychological science to programs and policies for pre-K to 12 education.
-
Ethnic and Racial Disparities in Education: This project will revisit a report from an APA Presidential Task Force to create materials for educators and administrators that are based on current psychological science.
-
Violence Directed Against Teachers: After a decade the Violence Directed Against Teachers Task Force, along with their partners in national teachers unions and school board associations, will conduct a follow-up study that will allow for the recording of trends over time and the generation of education policy on school management and safety; parent and community involvement; classroom climate; and teaching and learning.
- The Civil Discourse Project: The current state of discourse in the United States is a cause for concern. In response, APA’s Coalition for Psychology in Schools and Education and APA’s Ethics Committee have created several resources to help middle and high school educators and students develop the values and skills of civil discourse. Drawing from theory and research, these materials will be made available through the APA website at no cost:
- A summary of the project including the rationale for the project, a description of the processes for development of the civil discourse resources, and a brief literature review.
- A self-assessment measure of civil discourse for educators
- A self-assessment measure of civil discourse for middle and high school students and a guide for teaching civil discourse.
- A summary of online resources for teaching civil discourse
- A bibliography of references for scholars who wish to conduct research or examine the literature on which the project is based.
- A document describing the context necessary for successful development of civil discourse in school contexts.
The project began in 2021. We expect all materials to be available for use by April 2024. If you are interested in learning more about this project contact Mary Brabeck.
