The Office of CE Sponsor Approval (CESA) was created by APA to facilitate psychologists’ access to CE programs, and works in conjunction with the Continuing Education Committee (CEC). CEC meets twice per year—each spring and fall—to collectively review the applications received for both renewing sponsors and new applicants seeking to become APA-approved sponsors of continuing education to psychologists.
CESA, CEP and CoA: What is the difference?
CE Sponsor Approval (CESA)
It is the function of the Office of CE Sponsor Approval (CESA) to collaborate with CEC to implement and regulate standards and policies, and to ensure that the highest level of quality is maintained in program planning, management and delivery.
Continuing Education in Psychology (CEP)
The Office of Continuing Education in Psychology (CEP) offers a wide range of continuing professional education opportunities for psychologists. This office works with the Continuing Education Committee (CEC) which is responsible for overseeing the review and approval of CE Workshops and sessions at the annual convention. In addition, the CEP Office develops a variety of Independent Study programs, offers in-house workshops, and cosponsors a range of other workshops, seminars and conferences for CE credit.
Understanding APA Accreditation (APA-CoA)
The APA Commission on Accreditation (APA-CoA) is recognized by both the secretary of the U.S. Department of Education and the Council for Higher Education Accreditation, as the national accrediting authority for professional education and training in psychology. Accordingly, APA-CoA’s accreditation policies, procedures and guidelines are intended to be consistent with national recognized purposes and values of accreditation, as articulated by governmental and nongovernmental groups with an interest in accreditation.
CE versus CEU
The term Continuing Education Unit (CEU) should not be used to refer to credits earned from APA-approved organizations. CE credit for psychologists is granted on a one credit per one contact hour basis; CEU, on the other hand, grants one CEU for every ten contact hours.
