Description

Competitive sport is both physically and mentally challenging. Although athletes often believe they can respond to emotional stressors by “toughing it out,” they still experience anxiety and depression. This presentation will provide an overview of the unique conditions faced by athletes that impact their mental health, such as psychological pressure to win, and what therapists should know about athletic culture and environments to work effectively. The presentation will also describe how to utilize cognitive behavioral therapy to address anxiety and depression as well as enhance sport performance (e.g. cognitive flexibility and mindfulness).

Learning objectives

  • Identify the stressors and conditions that affect athlete mental health.
  • Discuss special considerations for effective work with athletes.
  • Apply cognitive behavioral therapy to treat anxiety and depression in a way that enhances rather than hinders performance.
