Description
This workshop starts with the premise, grounded in research findings, that adverse race-related events can be a risk factor for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) among ethnic minority persons. Adverse race-related events can be traumatic and associated with PTSD. Race-related stressors, measured by a Race-Related Stressor Scale, contributed uniquely and substantially to PTSD symptoms among Asian American Vietnam veterans. The killing of George Floyd and Black Lives Matter protests speak to the life threat of being African American in a society where systemic racism is ever present. This workshop discusses how psychologists can assess race-related PTSD using DSM-5 criteria to document psychological injury.
