Description

This intermediate workshop presents research, case studies, and clinical support to further mental health practitioners’ awareness, understanding, and ability to provide culturally competent mental health care to Black women. The workshop explores historical and current sociocultural factors that impact Black women’s identities and experiences. Specific attention is given to addressing the Strong Black Woman schema and providing models for how Black women can navigate through this schema. The workshop provides participants with skills for developing culturally competent case conceptualizations. Participants will engage in multicultural orientation reflective practice and integrate decolonization and liberation psychology principles into case conceptualization.

Learning objectives

  • Describe Black women’s intersecting identities, collective history, and current sociocultural factors that influence Black women’s identities.
  • Identify variables that impact the development of the Strong Black Women schema.
  • Identify components of cultural case conceptualization and practice creating cultural case conceptualizations.
