Helping Estranged Family Members

Common Reasons for Estrangement, Common Mistakes of Therapists

The field of psychology has largely ignored the realities of estranged parents and/or children in theory, research, and practice. While therapists frequently encounter estranged parents and children in their practices, few have undergone training that adequately addresses the specificity of the trauma afflicting this population, facilitates clients’ growth, or enhances the likelihood of reconciliation.

This series provides therapists with current social science research on the causes of estrangement and the various treatment modalities that are most effective in working with these clients.

All programs include closed captioning.

Live programs include PowerPoint presentation, Q&A with the presenter, and may include interactive polling, video clips, and other resources.

After the live air date, webinars are converted to on-demand programs, which offer the opportunity to earn CE credits by completing a test.

Programs in this series have been reviewed and approved by the APA Office of Continuing Education in Psychology.

The American Psychological Association is recognized by the New York State Education Department's (NYSED) State Board for Psychology as an approved provider of continuing education for licensed psychologists #PSY-0100. Programs meet NYSED requirements unless otherwise specified.
