Description
This program will identify and explore the explicit and implicit ways that harm has been inflicted on black bodies by systems including the mental health industry. There will be a review of both current and historical practices that have impacted the social, psychological and physiological functioning of marginalized groups. This includes our role as mental health professionals who have helped to perpetuate stereotypes through over-pathologizing and over-diagnosing of stigmatized communities. We will investigate conventional and non-conventional healing practices to help mitigate further harm and to begin the healing process for targeted and marginalized groups.
Learning objectives
- Discuss the ways that the body and brain keeps the score of racialized oppression.
- Explore stigmatization, over pathologization and barriers to mental health services.
- Investigate conventional and non-conventional healing practices of black and brown communities.
