This course offers a comprehensive introduction to the fundamentals of data analysis, beginning with an in-depth examination of data sets. Students will learn to identify and describe the various elements and structures that constitute a data set, emphasizing how data are organized and represented.

Variables, the building blocks of a data set, are investigated in detail, including distinctions between qualitative and quantitative variables and the range of possible levels of measurement. Graphs play a pivotal role in data analysis, and this course emphasizes their importance, with an emphasis on frequency distributions. Students will explore how various types of graphs can facilitate a deeper understanding of data by providing visual representations that make complex information more accessible.

The course also addresses the potential pitfalls associated with graphs. Students will learn to compare and contrast the use and misuse of graphs, developing a critical eye for identifying misleading or incorrect graphical representations. The course will emphasize identifying the appropriate frequency distribution for a given data set and interpreting frequency distributions. The course also makes use of jamovi, a statistical software program. Students will learn to create and navigate data sets within the software, as well as create frequency distributions for the variables represented therein. Throughout, the course aims to provide a balanced blend of theory and practice, ensuring that students are well-prepared for continued studies in data analysis.

Learning objectives

  • Explain the construction and elements of a set of data.
  • Explain the important attributes of a variable.
  • Demonstrate effective use of graphical representations of data.
  • Identify the right type of frequency distribution for any variable.
  • Extract the important information from a frequency distribution.
  • Create a data set in jamovi.
  • Create a representative frequency distribution.
