2023 international award winners

The Committee for Global Psychology is delighted to announce APA’s 2023 international award winners. Judith Gibbons, PhD, received the Award for Distinguished Contributions to the International Advancement of Psychology and Garth Neufeld, MA, received the International Humanitarian Award.

Judith Gibbons, PhD Judith Gibbons is Professor Emerita of Psychology at Saint Louis University. She earned her Ph.D. from Carnegie-Mellon University in brain and behavior, and held two post-doctoral fellowships in neuroscience at Albert Einstein College of Medicine and Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons. She later made a transition to focus her work on cross-cultural developmental psychology. She is the founding editor of the American Psychological Association (APA) Division 52 journal International Perspectives in Psychology: Research, Practice, Consultation, co-editor of the APA book series on Latin American psychology, and former associate editor of the Journal of Cross-Cultural Psychology.opens in new window  She served as president of the Interamerican Society of Psychologyopens in new window (known by its initials in Spanish, SIP) and the Society for Cross-Cultural Researchopens in new window, and was a Fulbright scholar at the Universidad del Valle de Guatemala. Her research focuses on adolescent development in the majority world, especially in Guatemala, intercountry adoption, and women’s empowerment. Dr. Gibbons resides in Antigua, Guatemala with her husband, two dogs, and two horses. There she also serves on the boards of several non-governmental organizations that promote adolescent well-being through education and gender-equality.

Garth Neufeld, MA Garth Neufeld, MA, is a professor of psychology at Cascadia College, and a social entrepreneur whose passion is to produce experiences that improve the personal and professional lives of others. He has previously taught at Highline College, Seattle University, and San Joaquin Valley College. He received his Master’s degree in Marriage and Family Therapy from Fresno Pacific University. Garth is the founder of Teaching Introductory Psychology Northwestopens in new window and the Teaching of Psychology Incubatoropens in new window workshop, and co-founder of the PsychSessions Podcastopens in new window and Intro Psych Coast-to-Coastopens in new window. He has served the national teaching of psychology community through various leadership roles through the Society for the Teaching of Psychology (Division 2; STP), the AP Psychology Reading, and APA’s Education Directorate. Garth is the recipient of a number of honors including the STP 2019 Wayne Weiten Teaching Excellence Award and a 2018 Citizen Psychologist presidential citation from APA for co-founding (along with his wife, Danielle) Shared Space For Allopens in new window, an organization that educates and mentors the most at-risk children and youth in Thailand toward the prevention of sex work and trafficking, and that now offers its students full college scholarships. Garth is also a minister and licensed therapist.
