In 1996—years before social networking sites such as Facebook and MySpace captured the world's attention—Weslyan University psychology professor Scott Plous, PhD, developed a networking site known as Social Psychology Network. The site has been a popular hub for psychology researchers, teachers, students and the public, logging 164 million page views since its launch. Now the site is poised to grow even bigger: In July, Plous received a $700,000 National Science Foundation grant to expand Social Psychology Network and transform it into a Web 2.0 site, allowing it to include more networking services, user-generated content and interactive features.
