APA Div. 12 (Society of Clinical Psychology) will devote many of its 86 hours of APA Convention programming to fostering communication between researchers and practitioners.

Called “Building a Two-Way Bridge between Research and Practice,” the programming will include a presidential address by Marvin R. Goldfried, PhD, and dialogues among top practitioners and researchers.

“We invited prominent people from research and practice so they’d be forced to talk with each other, to build that bridge,” says the division’s program chair, J. Christopher Muran, PhD, of Adelphi University. “In my view, this kind of dialogue is the best way to move an issue forward.”

Some highlights of those dialogues:

  • “Considering the evidence on diversity in practice and training,” chaired by Christopher R. Martell, PhD, with discussants Arthur M. Nezu, PhD, Beverly Greene, PhD, Jean Lau Chin, EdD, and Stanley Sue, PhD.

  • “Considering the evidence on therapeutic alliance with regard to practice and training,” chaired by Muran, with discussants Louis G. Castonguay, PhD, Jacques P. Barber, PhD, and Jeffrey L. Binder, PhD.

  • “Considering empirically supported treatments versus evidence-based practice,” chaired by Marvin R. Goldfried, PhD, with discussants E. David Klonsky, PhD, Barry E. Wolfe, PhD, Jeffrey L. Binder, PhD, and J. Gayle Beck, PhD.

  • “What do the clinician and researcher need from each other?” chaired by Michelle G. Newman, PhD, with discussants Linda C. Sobell, PhD, Linda F. Campbell, PhD, and Jeffrey J. Magnavita, PhD.
