- George Fox University awarded psychology professor Rodger Bufford, PhD, its Faculty Achievement Award for Graduate Research and Scholarship. His most recent research, supported by a John Templeton Foundation grant, is on how positive psychology impacts church communities. Bufford is founding chair of George Fox's graduate department of clinical psychology, where he has taught since 1990.
- Christopher France, PhD, was named as Ohio University's 53rd distinguished professor. France has worked at Ohio University for 23 years, with his more recent research focusing on blood donor motivation.
- Robert M. Kaplan, PhD, has joined the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality as chief science officer. He will oversee and review the funding of comparative effectiveness research, including examining improved health systems and practices, one part of the research requested in the Affordable Care Act. Kaplan formerly served as the director of the Office of Behavioral and Social Sciences Research at the National Institutes of Health. As director, he created partnerships among leaders in clinical research, behavioral science and mobile technology and helped support the study of behavioral and social dimensions in health through encouraging training in systems science methodologies.
- Northern Illinois University named school psychologist Christine Malecki, PhD, a Presidential Engagement Professor, an honor that comes with a $5,000 annual stipend for four years. The award recognizes Malecki's work with K–12 schools to improve academic and mental health services for children and adolescents and to create more paid externships in local schools for NIU school psychology doctoral students. She directs the university's school psychology program.
- YMCA of Greater Cincinnati has named Monica Mitchell, PhD, as one of its 2014 Career Women of Achievement for her work to improve her community. Mitchell is an associate professor of psychology at the University of Cincinnati and senior director of community relations and senior professor of pediatrics at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center.
- University of Memphis has named M. David Rudd, PhD, as its next president. Rudd has served as the university's provost since March 2013. Prior to that, Rudd was dean of the College of Social and Behavioral Science at the University of Utah from 2009–13, where he co-founded the National Center for Veterans Studies. From 2006 to 2009, he was professor and chair of the psychology department at Texas Tech University.
- The National Register of Health Service Psychologists has appointed Morgan T. Sammons, PhD, as its executive officer. In the role, Sammons will lead an organization of more than 10,000 health service psychologists. Founded in 1974, the National Register is dedicated to identifying qualified psychologists to consumers, health-care organizations and regulatory bodies. Most recently, Sammons was systemwide dean of the California School of Professional Psychology at Alliant International University.
- Linda Carter Sobell, PhD, was awarded the 2014 International Jellinek Memorial Award for outstanding contributions to the advancement of knowledge in the field of alcohol studies. This award is given in the area of Behavioral Studies (Clinical and Experimental) once every four years.
- Washburn University has named Laura Stephenson, PhD, dean of its College of Arts and Sciences. She chaired the psychology department from 2000–03 and has been associate dean of the college since 2004. She has been a member of the Washburn faculty since 1985.
