American Psychological Association. (2015, January 1). Giving back to psychology via the APF. Monitor on Psychology, 46(1). https://www.apa.org/monitor/2015/01/apf-psychology

Why did you decide to make a bequest through APF?

My reasons are multiple. Primary among them is the recognition that psychological research on lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender sexuality is a major factor in making possible the life and career I have. Much of that research was done with APF grants. I have been further impressed with APF's commitment to quality research with marginalized groups.

What has psychology meant to you?

In a word, everything. I am passionate about our science and our investment in people's lives. How could I not be when there isn't an aspect of human nature and experience that psychology doesn't study or enhance?

Why do you feel that giving back is important?

I have benefitted from the courage of LGBT men and women, many of whom were psychologists, who risked life, limb and career to make my life possible. I owe it to the next generation of LGBT women and men that they never face the conditions I faced as a young person. I believe, too, that psychology has and will continue to use the evidence of its research to advocate for and protect those men and women. Supporting APF will ensure we do the necessary research.
