Div. 6 changes its name

Clinical geropsychology section honors winners

The Society of Clinical Geropsychology, Section 2 of Div. 12 (Society of Clinical Psychology), has named its 2015 award winners:

  • Gregory Hinrichsen, PhD , of the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City, won the M. Powell Lawton Award for Distinguished Contributions to Clinical Geropsychology.
  • Brian Carpenter, PhD , of Washington University in St. Louis, won the Distinguished Clinical Mentorship Award.
  • Kellye Carver , of the University of North Texas, won the Student Paper Award for her paper "Influence of Grief among Parentally Bereaved Adults."

Div. 12 seeks campus representatives and student nominees

The Society for a Science of Clinical Psychology (SSCP), Section 3 of Div. 12 (Society of Clinical Psychology) is seeking graduate students who are interested in the practice and advancement of science in clinical psychology to serve as campus representatives who promote SSCP, serve on committees and work on student initiatives. Time commitment is flexible. To apply, send your name, school and a short statement of interest to SSCP Student Representatives Rosanna Breaux and Andrea Niles. SSCP is also seeking nominations for two student awards:

  • The Outstanding SSCP Student Teacher Award , which recognizes excellence and creativity in teaching (or serving as a teaching assistant) in clinical science. The nomination deadline is Dec. 1.  
  • The Outstanding SSCP Student Clinician Award , which recognizes excellent performance and initiative in clinical work. The nomination deadline is March 1 .

Div. 15 welcomes fellow nominations

Div. 15 (Educational Psychology) seeks fellow nominations for division members who have made unusual and outstanding contributions to the science of educational psychology. The nomination deadline is Nov. 20. Information on fellow status and instructions on how to apply via the APA online portal. Send questions to Selection Committee Chair Cynthia Hudley, PhD.

Psychological Services invites manuscripts on informatics

The Div. 18 (Psychologists in Public Service) journal Psychological Services invites manuscripts for a special section on "Informatics and Business Operations in Mental Health." Kathleen Lysell, PhD, and Clifford Smith, PhD, are guest editors of the special section. The journal welcomes papers in three specific areas:

  • Information on mental health workload measurement practices, including panel size, productivity evaluation, procedural coding practices, staffing ratios, improvement in no-show rates and clinic utilization patterns. Research on how these affect provider sustainability and burnout prevention is also encouraged.
  • Research on the development and use of analytical informatics tools to enhance program development, administrative oversight and clinical outcomes.
  • Performance improvement projects that seek to improve practice administration, including research on access and demand management, coding practices and information technology. The journal welcomes meta-analytic papers, theoretical-based papers and empirical papers. All papers must have administrative applications. Find more information and submit manuscripts. Div. 18 gives first Excellence in Training Award

The Serious Mental Illness and Severe Emotional Disturbance section of Div. 18 (Psychologists in Public Service) presented its first Excellence in Training Award to the Department of Veterans Affairs VISN 5 (VA Capitol Health Network) Mental Health Research, Education and Clinical Center in Baltimore. The award recognizes psychology training programs that prepare students to provide recovery-oriented, evidence-based services to adults with serious mental illnesses and/or youth with severe emotional disturbances. Winners also excel at teaching the key concepts of APA's Recovery to Practice initiative.

Attend regional community psychology meetings

Div. 27 (Society for Community Research and Action) invites psychologists to attend its three regional ecological-community psychology meetings. The regional meetings are organized by graduate students and bring together community psychologists and other like-minded people from applied and academic settings.

  • "Breaking Boundaries through Community Engaged Social Justice Work," the West region meeting, will be held Oct. 16, at the School of Interdisciplinary Arts and Sciences at the University of Washington Bothell.
  • • "Community Psychology Then and Now: From the ‘Swamp' to the City," the Southeast region meeting, will be held Oct. 23–25 at the University of North Carolina Uptown Center City Campus in Charlotte, North Carolina.
  • • "Forwarding Inquiry and Action for Social Change: Horizons, Tensions and Tools," the Midwest region meeting, will be held Oct. 23–24 and will be hosted by the Civil Society and Community Research program at the University of Wisconsin–Madison.

Div. 27 seeks nominations for awards and fellows

Div. 27 (Society for Community Research and Action), or SCRA, welcomes nominations for fellows and for its annual awards. SCRA fellows are Div. 27 members who have made outstanding contributions to community research and action. Send fellows nominations to Div. 27 by Dec. 1. Nominations for each of the following awards are also due Dec. 1:

  • Best Dissertation on a Topic Relevant to Community Psychology honors the best doctoral dissertation on community psychology completed between Sept. 1, 2013, and Aug. 31, 2015.
  • Emory L. Cowen Dissertation Award for the Promotion of Wellness honors the best dissertation on wellness promotion.
  • Early Career Award recognizes an early career community psychologist who is making a significant contribution to community psychology and SCRA.
  • Distinguished Contribution to Practice in Community Psychology Award is presented to an individual who has demonstrated innovation and leadership as a practitioner.
  • Distinguished Contributions to Theory and Research in Community Psychology Award honors a psychologist whose research career has made a significant contribution to community psychology.
  • Ethnic Minority Mentorship Award recognizes a Div. 27 member who has made exemplary contributions to the mentorship of ethnic minorities.

Attend the Div. 13 midwinter consulting psychology conference in Orlando

Div. 13 (Society of Consulting Psychology) will host its Midwinter Consulting Psychology Conference Feb. 3–7 in Orlando, Florida.
