American Psychological Association. (2015, December 1). ICD-10-CM is now in effect. Monitor on Psychology, 46(11). https://www.apa.org/monitor/2015/12/upfront-icd-10

As of Oct. 1, the ICD-10-CM is the required diagnostic code set for billing purposes. All health-care providers covered by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act are required to comply and must use ICD-10-CM codes in diagnostic coding on electronic and paper claims for services provided on or after Oct. 1, 2015. The change to ICD-10-CM does not affect procedure coding (Current Procedural Terminology, or CPT®) for outpatient services.

The APA Practice Organization and the APA Practice Directorate have compiled resources for psychologists on the Practice Central website to aid with the transition to ICD-10-CM.

Resources include:

  • Crosswalk of ICD-9-CM codes to ICD-10-CM
  • Converting to the ICD-10-CM diagnostic codes: Questions and answers for psychologists
  • ICD-10 Web-based application
  • The guide: Are you ready for ICD-10-CM?

These resources and more are available to all members of the APA Practice Organization. Some resources are exclusive content for members and require log in for access.

Members with questions can email the APA Practice Directorate Office of Practice Policy and Research or call (800) 374-2723, ext. 5911.
