Rodney L. Lowman, PhD Q1: How will you assure APA constituents, the general public and the international community that APA is committed to upholding the highest ethical standards?

Concerns raised by the Independent Review have contributed to perceptions of widespread ethical misbehavior within APA. Changing these perceptions will require re-earning trust. By assuring transparency of deliberations, rigorous debate among competing views and continuous review of ethical concerns, APA can, over time, regain the high esteem associated with an ethically exemplary organization.

As a past member of APA’s Ethics Committee and an expert in organizational and consulting ethics, I am also keenly aware of the serious ethical concerns raised by the Independent Review. Ethics case deliberations require confidentiality but appropriate supervision of the Ethics Office is still essential.

Q2: How would you promote communication and outreach to communities of color in response to domestic and international human rights and social justice issues?

Many social justice and human rights issues are germane to APA’s mission to serve the public by advancing "the creation, communication and application of psychological knowledge to benefit society and improve people’s lives." APA’s commitment to people of color and other minorities must never waiver and, as relevant to our mission, we must also support the important human rights issues of our day. By working proactively and collaboratively with organizations whose missions overlap ours, we can be more influential than by working independently. Prioritizing among competing opportunities will help APA use its considerable influence most effectively.
