Culbertson grant supports women in developing countries

Ismahan Soukeyna Diop, PhD, a part-time teacher in psychology at the Université Cheikh Anta Diop of Dakar, received the 2016 Frances M. Culbertson Travel Grant, enabling her to attend the 2016 International Congress of Psychology in Yokohama, Japan, where she presented her research on the psychological consequences of mastectomy on Senegalese women.

The biennial APF Culbertson grant supports women from developing countries in early stages of their careers.

Diop is one of the few researchers in clinical psychology in Senegal.

Can antigay prejudice affect your health?

David Lick In 2014, graduate student David Lick of the University of California, Los Angeles, set out to answer that question with his $15,000 Wayne F. Placek Grant. His grant allowed him to conduct the first experiment on minority stress theory, which proposes that experiencing antigay prejudice arouses stress responses that contribute to health disparities among gay and lesbian people.

The findings from Lick's research will have important implications for theoretical work on minority health disparities. For example, if antigay prejudice is shown to affect health, then policymakers will have strong justification to support legislation protecting gay and lesbian individuals from stigma.

The Placek Grant also provided Lick with practical skills that have helped him grow as a researcher.

"The various aspects of my Placek experience have strongly enhanced my training and have prepared me well for the next stage of my research career," Lick says. "I am entering the academic job market with new methodological and leadership experience for which I am incredibly grateful."

Two win Henkin Travel grants

Donors' generosity is also supporting the Paul E. Henkin School Psychology Travel Grants, which help to defer the costs of registration, lodging and travel for student members of APA Div. 16 (School) to attend the APA Annual Convention. This year's grant winners are Stephanie Schwartz of St. John's University and Chi-Ching Chuang of the University of Missouri.
