Work & well-being: New Work in America survey reveals toxic workplaces

APA’s latest Work in America survey finds that 19% of workers say their workplace is very or somewhat toxic, and more than 1 in 5 workers say they have experienced harm to their mental health at work. But the data also highlighted progress in the workplace regarding mental health support. The majority (77%) of workers report being very (36%) or somewhat (41%) satisfied with the support for mental health and well-being they receive from their employers, and 92% of respondents indicate that it is very (57%) or somewhat (35%) important to them to work for an organization that values their emotional and psychological well-being.

The Work in America report highlights recommendations for how employers can implement improvements across the U.S. Surgeon General’s Framework for Mental Health and Well-Being in the Workplace “five essentials.”

Training: A new specialty in psychoanalytic & psychodynamic psychology

In June, the American Board of Professional Psychology that grants board certification in psychology specialty areas approved a new specialty in psychoanalytic and psychodynamic psychology. The specialty was also endorsed by APA’s Commission for the Recognition of Specialties and Subspecialties in Professional Psychology (CRSSPP) in April 2022, and APA’s Council of Representatives voted to formally approve the CRSSPP recommendation later that year. The ABPP approval is significant for practicing psychologists who want to earn board certification in the specialty area; the Council approval allows APA’s Commission on Accreditation to recognize graduate, internship, and postdoc training programs that offer specialty training experiences in this area.
