Noteworthy accomplishments and recent happenings across psychology

The National Institute of Mental Health has awarded the James S. Jackson Memorial Award to Lisa Bowleg, PhD. Bowleg’s work focuses on social-structural and behavioral factors that impact the mental and physical health of Black men at diverse intersections of socioeconomic status and sexuality. She is a professor of applied social psychology at The George Washington University.

University of St. Thomas psychologist Kingsley Chigbu, PhD, has received the 2023 Excellence in ­Socio-Psychological Assessment Award at the Ninth African Mental Health Summit in July. The award recognizes Chigbu’s outstanding contributions to the field of mental health in service of the African community in the United States.

Christina Hassija, PhD, has been named dean of the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences at Cal State San Bernardino. Hassija will also hold an academic appointment as a tenured full professor in the Department of Psychology. Hassija has held several leadership positions since joining the university in 2013. Most recently, she served a one-year term as interim dean of the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences.

Adelphi University has named J. Christopher Muran, PhD, the new dean of the Gordon F. Derner School of Psychology. Muran joined the Derner School 14 years ago as associate dean and director of the PhD program in clinical psychology. Prior to joining Adelphi, Muran was chief psychologist in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Beth Israel Medical Center, now Mount Sinai, in New York City.

The Association of Diabetes Care & Education Specialists has awarded the Texas Diabetes Care & Education Specialist of the Year to Nicole Bereolos, PhD, for her outstanding contributions to diabetes education through dedication and innovation in the daily practice of patient care. Bereolos is a clinical health psychologist with psychopharmacology training in private practice in McKinney, Texas.

The Academy of Science, Engineering and Medicine of Florida has added psychologists Pamela Keel, PhD, and William Pelham, PhD, to its membership. Keel is a distinguished research professor in the Department of Psychology at Florida State University known for her translational research on eating disorders, including biological and psychological factors that contribute to binge eating and purging behaviors. Pelham is a distinguished university professor of psychology at Florida International University who studies ADHD in children and adolescents.

Developmental psychologist Alison Gopnik, DPhil, is this year’s winner of the Cognitive Science Society’s David Rumelhart Prize in Cognitive Science. Gopnik is a University of California Berkley psychology professor who researches how children learn to understand their own minds and make sense of the world around them. The Rumelhart Prize honors scholars who have made fundamental contributions to the theoretical foundations of human cognition.

The Psychonomic Society has awarded the Clifford T. Morgan Distinguished Leadership Award to James Pomerantz, PhD, a professor emeritus of psychological sciences at Rice University, and Colin MacLeod, PhD, distinguished professor emeritus in the Department of Psychology at the University of Waterloo. MacLeod’s research focuses on the broad domain of human cognition, with particular focus on attention and memory. Pomerantz’s work focuses on perception, visual attention, and perceptual organization.
