A new year means new possibilities and opportunities, which are often fueled by the significant trends that shape our field, our nation, and the broader world. Recognizing both the personal and professional implications of these trends is crucial for psychology’s continued growth and our ability to have an impact on major societal issues. To me, the implications of these trends fall into three interconnected buckets.

Psychologists must remain forward-looking—focused not only on the present but also on anticipating emerging and future trends. In doing so, we can position ourselves to effectively apply relevant psychological science in any context. For instance, as we see public distrust in science and resistance to equity, diversity, and inclusion grow, we must ensure we are translating psychological knowledge in ways that are digestible to various audiences with different levels of receptiveness to these ideas.

Our role extends beyond reacting to trends. We must shape them. For example, artificial intelligence (AI) is not just a reality we need to adapt to in our practices, research, workplaces, and schools—it is a transformative force we must help to inform. By integrating a broad range of psychological expertise into the development, use, and regulation of AI, we can enhance its capabilities while reinforcing ethical professional standards and preventing harm.

Psychology must address the broader impacts that major trends have on people’s mental health and well-being. The future of work, for example, is rapidly evolving, and conflicting workplace desires and expectations are taking a toll on people’s job satisfaction, productivity, and overall well-being. Psychologists are uniquely positioned to use our expertise to promote healthier work environments, whether by helping to define best practices, shaping policies, or promoting healthy coping strategies.

Our engagement with the trends unfolding now and on the horizon requires being both adaptable in response to changes and intentional about driving positive outcomes—for the field of psychology and broader society. By advocating for accessible mental health care, pushing for increased research funding, and promoting the application of psychological knowledge across a multitude of settings, we can ensure that our field remains at the forefront of societal progress.

In 2025, let us commit to staying informed and engaged with advancements rather than shy away from the trends that are shaping our future. Let us continue making meaningful contributions to individuals, communities, and systems as well as to the advancement of our profession. Together, we can navigate these transformative times and emerge stronger.
