APA president speaking at APA 2025

It has been both an honor and a profound privilege to serve as president of the American Psychological Association during a time when the significance of change is matched only by the urgency of the moment.

We stand at a pivotal juncture—not just for psychology but for our association and a world that increasingly looks to us for guidance, integrity, and leadership rooted in science and compassion. This year, I carried forward the theme “Strength in Unity” as a guiding conviction that our greatest strength lies not in conformity but in the richness of our diversity and in our willingness to turn toward one another in moments of challenge, discomfort, and change.

Serving as APA president has been one of the most deeply challenging and profoundly meaningful experiences of my life. I stepped into this role with hope and purpose, knowing the path would not be smooth. Yet I could not have anticipated the terrain: steep with friction, shadowed by uncertainty, quieted by pauses, and disrupted by seismic shifts that continue to reshape our lives and institutions.

Leadership, in this context, has felt like walking a tightrope between conviction and caution. The winds have not always been gentle. And yet, amid the turbulence, I have witnessed extraordinary courage. Members speaking truth—not to disrupt but to restore. Colleagues advocating for those most in need. Students urging psychology to rise to the moment and meet it with boldness and compassion.

Our field is being called to address individual suffering as well as systemic harm and collective healing to reimagine the role of psychology in shaping a more just and equitable society. This is where unity becomes strength through solidarity. When we build bridges between disciplines, communities, and lived experiences, we uncover new paths forward—paths that are inclusive, innovative, and transformative.

The world outside our walls presents us with intersectional crises: environmental emergencies, health inequities, displacement, political polarization, and a growing distrust of institutions, including science itself. And yet, in the face of these challenges, psychology remains a beacon. We are not merely observers of change. We are architects of transformation. Our tools are science, empathy, and ethical resolve. Our mission is not only to understand the human condition but to elevate it.

As I prepare to pass the torch, I do so with deep gratitude and appreciation. The cycle of leadership is not a solitary journey—it is a shared endeavor. And though this chapter closes for me, the story of our collective impact is far from finished.

In endings, we find clarity. In transitions, we find momentum. And in unity, we find strength.
