The American Psychological Association (APA) applauds National Basketball Association Commissioner Adam Silver’s appropriate and strong response to the recently surfaced racist comments by Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling.

Research has shown that racism and discrimination can cause real and lasting harm to both mental and physical health. Racism harms the psychological well-being of marginalized groups and contributes to inequities in education, health care, housing and employment.

Our society needs to combat all forms of racism and discrimination in order to maximize the potential of all Americans and to allow our country to thrive in today’s diverse and global world. NBA Commissioner Silver did his part this week.

The American Psychological Association, in Washington, D.C., is the largest scientific and professional organization representing psychology in the United States. APA's membership includes nearly 130,000 researchers, educators, clinicians, consultants and students. Through its divisions in 54 subfields of psychology and affiliations with 60 state, territorial and Canadian provincial associations, APA works to advance the creation, communication and application of psychological knowledge to benefit society and improve people's lives.
