American Psychological Association. (2014, October 29). APA Science Executive Director Dr. Steven Breckler to leave the APA staff at the end of 2014 [Press release]. https://www.apa.org/news/press/releases/2014/10/breckler-leaves

After serving for over ten years as APA’s Executive Director for Science, Dr. Steven Breckler will be leaving the Association staff at the end of the year.

“Steve was the first executive director I hired at APA, and he has been an invaluable member of my executive management team, ensuring that a psychological science perspective was a part of all of our work,” said APA CEO Dr. Norman B. Anderson. “His decade of leadership and his contributions to APA and psychological science have been remarkable. Steve has led an extremely effective science advocacy program, and he has been a major force in support of APA’s strategic goal of increasing the recognition of psychology as a science.”

Dr. Breckler’s many accomplishments and contributions include stewardship of the APA Science Leadership Conference, an array of public education campaigns, the Center for Workforce Studies, and collaborating with Dr. Katherine Nordal, APA’s Executive Director for Practice, on Clinical Practice Guidelines.

“Beyond his work on behalf of APA and psychological science, Steve has been a great colleague to those of us who’ve worked with him on a day-to-day basis. His insights, collaborative spirit, and dedication will be truly missed,” said Anderson.

“I greatly appreciate the opportunity I have had over the past ten years to contribute to APA’s mission and to advance the science of psychology,” Breckler said. “The combination of a dedicated and talented staff and resources make APA a catalyst for the stimulation, growth and dissemination of psychological science. I look forward to making continued contributions to the advancement of behavioral and social sciences.”

Breckler will continue as Executive Director for Science for the remainder of 2014. The search for a new Executive Director for Science will begin shortly.
