WASHINGTON -- Two titles from Magination Press®, the children’s self-help imprint of the American Psychological Association, have been selected for inclusion in a select list of 35 expert-endorsed books for young people as part of the Reading Well for young people program for public libraries in England.

This effort is part of the Reading Well Books on Prescription program, which since 2013 has enabled public libraries throughout England to offer books to support to adults with common mental health needs. Co-created by mental health experts and a panel of young people who have had experience with mental health issues, the Reading Well for young people program helps young people to understand and manage their well-being and emotional resilience. It provides 13- to 18-year-olds access to books offering high-quality information, support and advice on a wide range of mental health issues such as anxiety, depression, ADD/ADHD, autism, eating disorders and other challenging life pressures. Books selected are available to borrow from public libraries across England to support young people with diagnosable mental health issues, and can be recommended by school nurses, counselors and other health professionals.

The two Magination Press titles selected for inclusion on the Reading Well for young people core book list are "My Anxious Mind: A Teen’s Guide to Managing Anxiety and Panic" and "Putting on the Brakes: Understanding and Taking Control of Your ADD or ADHD," Third Edition. Written by Michael A. Tompkins, PhD, and Katherine A. Martinez, PsyD, "My Anxious Mind" helps teens take control of their anxious feelings by providing cognitive behavioral strategies to tackle anxiety head on and to feel more confident and empowered in the process. "Putting on the Brakes," by Patricia O. Quinn, MD, and Judith M. Stern, MA, is the go-to resource for kids with ADHD and is loaded with practical ways to improve organizational, focusing, studying and homework skills and contains strategies for making friends, controlling emotions and being healthy.

The Reading Wellopens in new window for young people program is delivered by The Reading Agency in partnership with the Society of Chief Librarians and the Association of Senior Children’s and Education Librarians, and is supported by a range of health organizations, including NHS England (through its Improving Access to Psychological Therapies program), Public Health England, Mental Health Foundation, Mind and YoungMinds.

Magination Press, an imprint of the American Psychological Association, publishes picture books, middle school readers, teen guides and workbooks to help children deal with a wide variety of psychological concerns and challenges.
