WASHINGTON — Following is a statement by Sandra L. Shullman, PhD, president of the American Psychological Association, in support of World Mental Health Day, Oct. 10:

“World Mental Health Day is an opportunity to emphasize the importance of mental health to human well-being. Mental health and physical health are intertwined. There is no overall health without good mental health.”

“Mental health has been neglected for too long, but it must not be overlooked any longer. Every 40 seconds, a human life ends by suicide. Nearly 20% of the world's population suffers from a treatable mental health condition. The annual cost to the global economy of neglecting psychological well-being is estimated to reach $16 trillion worldwide by 2030, with approximately 12 billion working days lost to mental illness each year.”

“The COVID-19 pandemic is undoubtedly leading to an even greater need for mental health and psychosocial support throughout the next few years and a heavier burden on an already underfunded and limited system of care globally.”

“The American Psychological Association joins with leaders in global mental health in calling for a massive scale-up of innovation and investment in mental health around the world.”

Reps. Tony Cardenas, D-Calif., Brian Fitzpatrick, R-Pa., and Joe Kennedy III, D-Mass., introduced a resolution Friday recognizing World Mental Health Day. The resolution highlights the prevalence of mental health disorders globally and honors mental health and social services workers.
