International Journal of Play Therapy is a quarterly, peer-reviewed journal that publishes reports of original research, theoretical articles, and substantive reviews of topics central to play therapy on behalf of psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, counselors, school counselors and psychologists, marriage and family therapists, and other mental health professionals.

The journal publishes information and ideas about the complete spectrum of clinical interventions used in play theory to the community of academicians and practitioners who teach and employ it.

International Journal of Play Therapy is the official journal of the Association for Play Therapy, a national professional society serving said professionals within and outside of the United States.

Kimberly M. Jayne, PhD, LPC (OR), LMHC (WA), NCC, PMH-C, RPT-S (she/they) is the editor of International Journal of Play Therapy®, a full professor and PhD program coordinator in the counseling department at Saybrook University. She is a member of APT’s Research Committee and has also served on APT’s Conference Program Committee and the Oregon Association for Play Therapy board. Kimberly owns a private practice where she provides play therapy, parenting and family therapy, and supervision and training for play therapists. Kimberly’s research focuses on child-centered play therapy, person-centered theory, and working with caregivers and parents in play therapy.

International Journal of Play Therapy is now accepting manuscripts for possible publication. Possible topics include:

  • Developmental differences and their impact on play therapy strategies
  • Neuropsychology and play therapy
  • Therapist burnout and compassion fatigue
  • Play therapy in schools
  • Topics surrounding military deployment (e.g. family reunification)
  • The use of assessment in play therapy

In addition to manuscripts reporting studies that enhance play therapy as an evidence-based modality, we encourage submissions in the form of theoretical articles and substantive reviews.
