Practice Innovations serves practitioners by publishing clinical, practical, and research articles on current and evolving standards, practices, and methods in professional mental health practice.

Designed as a cross-disciplinary publication with a multi-theoretical scope, the journal supports innovation and the highest standards of care in mental health practice. The journal is particularly interested in submissions that translate advances in research, technology, and professional practice into meaningful applications for clinicians.

Practice Innovations is seeking submissions on the following:

  • conceptual and technical developments in assessment and intervention
  • applications of ethics in practice
  • ongoing professional self-care
  • challenging problems and populations
  • evolving practice models or interdisciplinary health care settings
  • important issues regarding innovations in practice and practice settings
  • culturally responsive, equitable, and accessible models of care
  • innovations in telepsychology, hybrid care models, and digitally enhanced psychotherapy
  • applications of artificial intelligence, machine learning, digital health technologies, virtual reality, wearable technologies, and other emerging technologies in assessment, treatment, supervision, training, and service delivery

Articles should aim to cross disciplinary boundaries for all mental health clinicians who want practical, evidence-based information. Unsolicited manuscripts that propose new assessment approaches, treatment recommendations, clinical decision-making frameworks, or practice guidelines should be supported by an appropriate methodological foundation. Clinical experience, opinion and narrative reviews of the literature can provide valuable insights and help identify emerging issues; however, they are generally insufficient on their own to support the authors’ clinical recommendations in a scholarly journal. Manuscripts proposing practice guidance should typically include evidence derived from methods such as systematic reviews, empirical evaluation, formal consensus processes, or other rigorous approaches that establish the rationale, applicability, and limitations of the proposed recommendations.

“Business of Practice” articles are not encouraged per se (e.g., “How to make more money”), but there is a need for business of practice articles that focus on the ethics of practice as it relates to business, legislative issues that impact practice and the development of niche practice that may open up market opportunities for practitioners.

Practice Innovations is a journal that is owned by APA Division of Psychologists in Independent Practice (Division 42) and published by APA.
