The editor of Technology, Mind, and Behavior invites proposals for a special issue on any topic of interest to our readership. We welcome submissions from prospective guest editors who can articulate a compelling theme, engage interdisciplinary scholarly communities, and manage a rigorous peer-review process. Special issues provide an opportunity to curate a collection of innovative, high-quality articles that advance knowledge and practice in the field.

Proposal submission guidelines

Before proposing a special issue, you are encouraged to contact the editor to discuss your idea. To propose the special issue, please prepare documents that address the following components:

1. Draft call for papers (CFP)

Provide a draft CFP that outlines the focus of the special issue, the significance of the topic, and the types of manuscripts sought. Your draft CFP should include:

  • Name of the special issue (maximum seven words).
  • Names, affiliations, and contact information for all guest editors.
  • Description of the thematic focus, including relevance to the interdisciplinary audience of TMB and timeliness related to current societal concerns (usually 2-3 paragraphs).
  • Types of submissions desired (usually 1 paragraph, usually a subset of types from the list of formats generally accepted by TMB).
  • Description of the open science practices encouraged or required for consideration (usually a few sentences, drawn from the badges offered by TMB).
  • Draft submission instructions including links to both the submission guidelines and the submission portal.
  • Contact information for inquiries about submitting to the collection.

2. Proposed timeline

Include a clear and detailed timeline for the manuscript handling process surrounding this special issue. Please specify target dates for each milestone:

  • (optionally; if used) Letters of Intent Deadline: [Date]
  • Initial Manuscript Submission Deadline: [Date]
  • First Peer Review Deadline: [Date]
  • First Author Revision Deadline: [Date]
  • Intended Final Review/Acceptance Deadline: [Date]

Please allow sufficient time for peer review and revisions in accordance with both our journal’s standards and the availability and capabilities of the guest editorial team. Ideally, all submissions within your special issue should be accepted within a 60-day window, and the standard deadline given to reviewers is 2–3 weeks. However, you should plan around some reviewers taking longer than you expect or failing to submit their reviews even after waiting for the duration of their invitation window.

3. Dissemination and advertising plan

Describe the intended audience for your CFP, especially the disciplines being targeted (1–2 paragraphs).

Next, list the methods you will use to advertise and circulate the CFP to relevant scholarly and professional communities. Please include specific strategies, such as:

  • Names of academic and professional listservs
  • Social media channels (e.g., Bluesky, LinkedIn, ResearchGate)
  • Relevant society or association newsletters
  • Personal networks and institutional announcements
  • Targeted outreach to research centers or working groups

In each case listed, please name the specific individuals, institutions, or services that will be used.

4. Guest editorial team biographies

Include a brief (approx. 100–150 words) biography for each member of the proposed guest editorial team. The biography should highlight relevant editorial experience and expertise in the subject area, along with a summary of all prior roles as a reviewer or editor. Please include:

  • Name, affiliation, and contact information
  • Summary of research interests and relevant experience related to the topic of the CFP
  • Notable publications or editorial roles related to the topic of the CFP

5. List of prospective contributors and reviewers

Provide a preliminary list of authors you plan to invite and reviewers you plan to recruit, along with a brief description of their anticipated contributions (a few words or a sentence per author/reviewer). For each, indicate:

  • Name, affiliation, and role(s) (i.e., contributor and/or reviewer)
  • For contributors, description of expected contribution or a proposed title/topic (1-2 sentences)
    • Please indicate if the author has already been approached and has committed to submitting a manuscript. A substantial number of already-committed authors will increase the likelihood of acceptance of your proposal. It is recommended to share drafts of your proposal with the Editor for feedback before approaching potential authors directly.
  • For reviewers, description of their area of expertise as a reviewer (1-2 sentences)

Submission instructions

Please send your special issue proposal or any related questions directly to the Editor, Professor Richard Landers. All proposals will be evaluated based on their scientific merit, relevance, feasibility, and the proposed team’s capacity to manage the special issue process.
