About the Postdoctoral Fellowship in Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services
The purpose of the Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services (MHSAS) Postdoctoral Fellowship Program is to support the training of practitioners and policymakers in behavioral health services and prevention.
The principles aims are to promote culturally competent behavioral health service delivery and policy related to communities of color; to increase the number of psychologists from communities of color delivering behavioral health services to underserved populations and to provide them with clinical competencies and confidence through intensive experiences in advanced, professional specialty training; and to increase the understanding of the social, economic and political forces affecting the behavioral health of, prevention and treatment provided to, individuals from communities of color; and to further develop analytical skills in matters of public policy formulation, legislation and implementation related to communities of color.
The strongest candidates for this fellowship are those who are primarily receiving training specializing in clinical and policy issues in behavioral health.

- U.S. citizens, permanent residents, or non-citizen nationals.
- A conferred doctoral degree in psychology in the last five years or will receive doctoral degree prior to beginning fellowship term.
- Engaged in specialized postdoctoral training (not a permanent employment position) by the fall immediately following the application deadline.
- The ability to demonstrate support from an established sponsor at the applicant's postdoctoral institution.
- Strong commitment to a career in ethnic minority behavioral health services or policy.
- African Americans, Alaska Natives, American Indians, Asian Americans, Hispanics/Latinos, Native Hawaiians, and Pacific Islanders are especially encouraged to apply.
