The Advocacy Office is here to help divisions meet members’ demands for help navigating these unprecedented times. Divisions can also reach out to us to:
- Learn about the legislative, judiciary, and regulatory landscapes and opportunities for action. Our staff track key developments across a broad range of issues, organized in four portfolio areas while recognizing the overlap and connections across areas of expertise. We can share information about important bills, flag the impact of significant lawsuits and provide clarity on the rule-making process. We provide opportunities for members to engage in these areas, such as providing subject-matter expertise for federal regulatory comments, in Congressional meetings, or using action alerts to weigh in quickly on legislative and regulatory proposals. Join our Psychology Advocacy Network and subscribe to the Washington Update and Practice Update to receive timely notifications and updates. Please also consider subscribing to the Science Spotlight.
- Receive customized training on ways to engage beyond APA. We provide tools and skills-based training on cultivating relationships with both federal and state policymakers and officials and partnering with organizations and other thought leaders to protect and advance psychology and the profession. While many of our training courses are virtual, we do assess requests for in-person training on a case-by-case basis.
- Provide opportunities for financial advocacy. Learn more about the Psychology PACopens in new window and how it supports Congressional champions.
- Build a bidirectional communication channel with our office. If you have not already, please consider learning more about and participating in our Division Advocacy Partner program. So far 18 divisions participate in the program: 8, 9, 12, 14, 17, 18, 22, 31, 32, 34, 38, 40, 41, 42, 46, 52, 54, 55 and 56. We accept Division Advocacy Partner nominations on a rolling basis.
Policy development: We routinely consult with divisions on proposals and ideas for new APA policy and can help connect division members with other divisions who may have similar interests. Please email us if your division is interested in a consultation.
If you have questions about any of the above topics, please reach out to Doris Parfaite-Claude, director of Grassroots Engagement, and she will connect you to the relevant member of our team.
