If APA manages your division membership, a welcome message is sent immediately to the new member upon joining. As of July 21, 2026, we are now accepting new members for the 2027 dues year. This is the time to think about ways to welcome new members. The welcome email is a good first step, but here are some suggestions you can use right now to take your new member orientation to the next level (and increase the likelihood of a renewal).

  1. Retention starts as soon as a member joins. Members expect immediate gratification when they join. Their interest in what your division provides is at an all-time high when they have just joined. Connect with new members as soon as you can.
  2. Follow up throughout the year with additional information about benefits and upcoming opportunities.
  3. Create different outreach messages based on personas such as member type, career stage, event attendees, or other characteristics.
  4. Make sure your online presence is what you want it to be. Check to make sure your website is up to date with relevant information for new members.
  5. Are there leadership changes, opportunities, awards, webinars, or announcements to communicate? Make sure those opportunities are shared.

If it has been a while since you have seen your welcome message, contact your Division Engagement Office account liaison to review your current message and make updates if needed.
