Why did you join the division?

Jessica Hoffman, PhD I come from a creative family—my mother and father are a painter and photographer. While studying creativity and emotion regulation in graduate school, I was introduced to Division 10 by my mentor, Dr. Sandy Russ. It was easy to see that Division 10 is full of friendly and brilliant scientists.

What do you get out of your involvement?

As secretary for Division 10, I correspond and work closely with our members and officers. It has been a huge opportunity to expand my network, and to learn from those who are more established. In my role at the Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence, I have the opportunity to bring innovations in thinking and learning to over 5,000 schools servicing millions of students. I feel lucky to have access to such an incredible group of researchers and practitioners within Division 10 to garner inspiration.

What are you or your division working on now?

We just held our first divisional conference in March of 2024, in Denton, Texas. It was a huge success, bringing in members and new folks from all over the USA and around the world. I am very excited to share that I am organizing the second conference for March 2025 in New Haven, Connecticut.

What’s something you want people to know about your division?

Aesthetics, creativity, and the arts is a big tent. We have members who span clinical/counseling psychology, industrial organization psychology, personality, experimental, and cognitive psychology and more. There is so much innovation. Division 10 is small but mighty.

If you weren’t a psychologist, what would you be?

A professional equestrian—hunter/jumper, to be exact. In fact, I was a pro trainer and rider for many years but went back to amateur status once I had children.
