APA Journals

APA Journals produces an array of scholarly journals that cover the spectrum of modern psychology. Journals published more than 64,602 pages in 2022 across 89 journals, representing more than 5,089 articles in 508 journal issues.

APA Journals demonstrated its commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) in 2022 by implementing recommendations from the Publications and Communications Board to improve equity in published research. Journal-level initiatives also recommended in APA Journals’ Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Toolkit for Journal Editors include journal diversity statements, which 6 APA Core titles have adopted; detailed participant descriptions, which 13 APA Core titles now require; sample justifications, which 8 APA Core titles now require; and reflexivity or positionality statements, which 3 APA Core titles now recommend. APA also implemented an editorial fellowship initiative. Eighteen journals will offer early-career psychologists (ECPs) from historically excluded groups fellowships designed to improve access to journal leadership positions; as many as 67 fellows will participate in 2023 (the program’s first year).

The Publications and Communications Board and the Board of Scientific Affairs created a Workgroup on Journal Reporting Guidelines for Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, and Justice in Psychological Science. The workgroup will develop best practices related to the manner in which race and ethnicity are discussed within scientific manuscripts in psychological science, which will be reviewed by the P&C Board, BSA, Council of Editors, and several liaison societies in 2023.

Editor search chairs are now using a toolkit for promoting equitable editor searches in diversifying search committees and improving recruitment of those historically excluded from journal leadership positions.

APA Journals continued a partnership with Bowie State University to spotlight student researchers of color in psychology and plans to host a webinar for Bowie State students and faculty on a Practice Innovations special issue on race, culture, and practice in Spring 2023.

APA Journals worked closely with the peer review vendor, Aries Systems, to launch an improved mechanism for collecting demographic information from authors and reviewers in the peer review system (Editorial Manager) in 2021 and will have updated journal-level demographic data to share with editors early in 2023 based on peer review participants during the 2022 publication year.

In 2022, APA Journals published more than 65 special issues or sections of journals. The following are examples of special issues: Asian American Journal of Psychology ’s The Growth of Filipina/x/o American Psychology, and Asian America and the Covid-19 Pandemic Parts 1 & 2; Canadian Journal of Behavioural Science’s Exceptional Canadian Contributions to Research in Depression; Cultural Diversity and Ethnic Minority Psychology’s Collaborative and Participatory Research to Promote Engagement, Empowerment, and Resilience for Immigrant and Refugee Youth, Families, and Communities; Consulting Psychology Journal’s The Science and Practice of Learning Agility; Clinical Psychology: Science and Practice’s Incorporating DEI informed-frameworks and increasing access to parent-focused interventions in pediatric psychology; Group Dynamics: Theory, Research, and Practice’s Group Dynamics of the U.S. Capitol Insurrection; Health Psychology’s Cardiovascular Behavioral Medicine; The Humanistic Psychologist’s Being and Becoming: Celebrating Women in Humanistic Psychology; Motivation Science’s Aggressive Motivation; Journal of Occupational Health Psychology’s Preventing Interpersonal Stressors at Work; Psychology and Aging’s Transparency, Replicability, and Discovery in the Psychological Science of Adult Development and Aging; Psychology and Neuroscience’s Women in Neuroscience; Psychology of Popular Media’s “This Is (Not) Fine”: The Psychology of Popular Media During 2020 Crises; Practice Innovations’ Race, Culture, and Practice; Spirituality in Clinical Practice’s Spirituality in Trauma Treatment; Psychological Services’ Responding to Individuals and Communities After Disasters and Other Traumatic Events; Translational Issues in Psychological Science’s Psychological Science and Creativity, and Psychology and the Pandemic; Psychological Trauma: Theory, Research, Practice, and Policy’s Resilience and Perseverance for Human Flourishing; and Psychology of Violence’s Police, Violence, and Social Justice: From Science to Informed Practice and Policy.

Along with the production of the play, the Theater Company has partnered with MP, authors, and their local CBS affiliate to develop parent resources and a town hall program that interviews families and local experts about racial justice. Online Products & Solutions

APA’s platform (PsycNet) and databases (PsycInfo, PsycArticles, PsycBooks, PsycExtra, PsycTests, and PsycTherapy) are supported by the Product Management and Content Management departments in APA Publishing.

The Content Management department oversees and implements policy and program development in all matters related to content for the PsycInfo and PsycTests databases. Initiatives to ensure the quality of the PsycINFO database included an ongoing re-evaluation of journals on the coverage list.

  • More than 207,900 records were released into the PsycInfo database in 2022 and by the end of the year, the database contained over 5.3 million records. Of these 887,519 records have ORCID IDs and 291,969 are Open Access. In addition, the database contains more than 144 million cited references. The number of journals covered by PsycINFO at the end of 2022 was 2,291, 34 journalswere dropped during the ongoing journal re-evaluation process and 31 new journals were added.
  • PsycInfo also includes the metadata records for the PsycArticles and PsycBooks databases:
  • Over 7,300 metadata records were added to the PsycArticles database, bringing the total number of records to 226,952.
  • Approximately 621 APA book and chapter records were added to PsycBooks. At the end of the year, PsycBooks contained 73,317 book and chapter records.
  • The PsycTests database grew by 3,752 new records, totaling 71,055 records by the end of the year. Nearly half of the metadata records are accompanied by full tests.
  • The PsycExtra database has been transformed into an archive for APA and APA-related content only. More than 1200 such archival records were added to PsycExtra in 2022.

APA PsycInfo is the trusted, authoritative abstracting and indexing service in the behavioral and social sciences featuring both global and multidisciplinary content. In 2020 APA launched a free, customized research notification service with seamless access to full text to assist researchers with keeping up to date with the latest research in psychology. The notification service uses artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) to provide a unique personalization experience. As a researcher engages with the notification content, the service adapts to the researcher’s preferences based on click and read data, resulting in an experience personalized to individual research interests. With APA PsycInfo as the foundation, the service includes research from nearly 2,300 journals in psychology and related disciplines, dissertations, preprints, PubMed, and national and international conference data. In 2022, APA enhanced the service based on researcher feedback to include topic mapper and citation/reference mapper discovery and exploration tools as well as an explore journal feature. The notification service supports the research process and brings APA PsycInfo, as well as other research content, deeper into the workflow of researchers, providing greater discoverability of psychological research content. Once a researcher subscribes to the service, they receive a scheduled weekly email with a wide variety of content and sources, which keeps researchers informed on current developments in their specialty area.

APA PsycNet, the publishing platform for APA's scholarly content, hosted over 100 million user sessions in 2022, with 7 million APA journal article and book chapter downloads by institutional subscribers, APA members, and the general public. More than 50 million researchers, students, librarians, and clinicians followed links to APA articles and books from Google Scholar, PubMed, social media, and various discovery services. The platform hit a new monthly record of 3.58 million users in November of 2022. Another 2.5 million articles and book chapters have been downloaded from APA PsycNet via the innovative “Get access” authentication service. This service does an entitlement check by institutional email domain or IP validation to streamline access to APA content for subscribers on any vendor platform, regardless of their starting point, location, and device.

Another new service on PsycNet in 2022 is Scite.ai, smart citation badges integrated into the scientific literature on the platform. This service gives authors and researchers better insight into how APA publications are supported by other scholarly works. Features implemented in 2022 also included the addition of Altmetric badges to the American Psychologist articles and other usage metrics that help APA PsycNet users evaluate the impact of scholarly publications.

Academic Writer has evolved into three distinct products and corresponding value propositions, with two of those three going live in the past year. In March 2022, we launched Academic Writer Direct, a Business to Consumer (B2C) product for which students can purchase individual subscriptions. In the fall, we re-launched institutional sales in the international market. In addition to these initiatives, new features were released throughout the year to support all three products. These include:

  • support for Learning Tools Interoperability (LTI) 1.3 integrations for course adoption customers
  • offline mode in the Writing Center to support students’ writing on-the-go
  • in-product tours to shorten the learning curve for new users

Over the next twelve months, the Academic Writer development roadmap will continue to balance customer needs across its three products. We plan to expand our reach particularly in the newly launched sales models; for Academic Writer Direct, there will be continued innovation through our new marketing strategies and channels (e.g., YouTube ads and TikTok content).

PsycLearn is an online learning delivery platform designed to immerse students into undergraduate-level content using interactive activities, instant feedback, and visualization tools that cannot be replicated in the flat format of a textbook. It is available for three undergraduate courses: Research Methods, Introduction to Social Psychology, and Statistics for the Behavioral Sciences. PsycLearn provides a personalized experience to ensure that highly successful students can expedite concept mastery, while students who need more help are offered an alternative path that provides the review material they need to meet their learning goals.

Specialized topics in PsycLearn are now also available to the public at large for life-long learning and upskilling. APA has partnered with MOOC providers edX and Coursera to deliver a series of 4-12 hour courses in topics ranging from psychological research and data analysis to social decision making and gender and sexuality. The first course, Qualitative Research in Psychology, went live on the edX platform in December 2022 and will soon by followed by courses in Positive Psychology, Data Analysis for the Behavioral Sciences, Learning through Cognitive Psychology, and many others. For more information, please see Free online courses from American Psychological Associationopens in new window. Courses are also planned to be launched on the Coursera platform in early spring.
