In August 2012, the APA Council of Representatives allocated $3 million over a period of three years for seed funding to increase the number of APA-accredited internship programs and positions. The dual purpose of this funding was to expand the number of accredited internship positions and to promote quality training for professional practice. Since that time, 153 grants have been awarded and 79 programs have obtained APA-accreditation. These newly accredited programs have added 320 placements to the pool of accredited internships. Twenty-two programs are currently under review.
The APA Grants for Internships Program has been an essential component of initiatives by APA and professional psychology education and training organizations to increase the number of accredited internship positions and minimize the internship imbalance. In July 2017, the Board of Educational Affairs sunsetted the Internship Stimulus Grant Program Working Group, and thanked the members for their commitment. Members of the working group were:
- Chair: Sharon Berry, PhD, ABPP
- Jeff Baker, PhD, ABPP
- G. Andrew H. Benjamin, JD, PhD, ABPP
- Eugene D'Angelo, PhD, ABPP
- John C. Norcross, PhD, ABPP
- Celiane Rey-Casserly, PhD, ABPP
