Set your students up for success this semester by helping them master APA Style. By providing a foundation for effective communication, APA Style guidelines enable all writers, both new and experienced, to develop their scholarly writing skills, hone the precision and clarity of their communication, and present their ideas in a clear, precise, and inclusive manner. Style guidelines are also intended to aid readers by making papers easier to read and references easier to locate and ensuring that language shows respect and sensitivity for all people.

Most APA Style guidelines apply to both student papers and professional manuscripts. The seventh edition offers expanded guidance for students and others new to writing academic papers in APA Style. These include adding a student paper title page, descriptions of common types of student papers and assignments, and information on citing classroom, intranet, and audiovisual sources.

Guides for APA Style

The authoritative resource for APA Style is the seventh edition Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association. The official style guide for students is the Concise Guide to APA Style, which provides the essentials for formatting student papers and other course assignments.

Many style guidelines remain unchanged in the seventh compared to the sixth edition APA Style. Notable updates include the format of title pages and heading levels, endorsement of the singular “they,” use of one space after a period, standardized format for tables and figures, and inclusion of more author names in reference list entries. This edition also promotes accessibility for everyone; the APA Style team consulted accessibility experts to ensure that the guidelines support users who read and write works in APA Style through a variety of modalities. For example, a streamlined format for in-text citations reduces the burden of writing and reading them. Use of a variety of fonts and default settings in common word-processing programs means that fewer adjustments must be made to APA Style papers.
