Implement Your Plan

APA’s Resource for Individual Development Plans (IDP)
Implement Your Plan

Share your plan with mentors and supervisors, and collect feedback as you progress.

Take advantage of resources from your institution and opportunities to gain professional skills and competencies as part of your training.

Most importantly: Hold yourself accountable.

Your interests, the job market, new opportunities — these all change. So you should plan to revise your IDP regularly.

IDPs can be used at any stage of your career pathway — not just as a graduate student or postdoc. Update your IDP so it is current with your career stage, and you have a plan to achieve what you want.

Don't Forget to Revisit & Revise

Over the course of your postdoc, it's possible for your interests to change. Or, as you develop new competencies, new opportunities arise. Maybe changes in your personal life impact your professional goals.

Take the time to sit and think about your current training, obligations and goals. Find a good opportunity to revisit parts of the IDP process and potentially reevaluate your steps.
