Funding opportunities

$6,000 for couple or family dynamics research

Graduate students who are conducting research that advances theory, assessment or clinical practice in couple, family or multigenerational dynamics can apply for the $6,000 Randy Gerson Memorial Grant from the American Psychological Foundation. APF gives priority to projects that expand Gerson's work. Apply by Feb. 1.

$1,500 for population research or travel

Students or early career researchers who are conducting research on human reproductive behavior or doing population studies can apply for $1,500 Henry P. David Research Grants from the American Psychological Foundation to support their research or $1,500 Henry P. David Travel Grants to support research-related travel or attendance at an international meeting. Apply by Feb. 15.

$1,000 for project on disability services

The $1,000 APAGS Disabilities Grant funds a project that promotes training and educational experiences in practice or services for people with disabilities or focuses on the recruitment, retention and training of individuals with disabilities. Apply by Dec. 3.

$1,000 for dissertation research

$1,000 for work to recruit or retain minority psychology students

The APAGS Committee for the Advancement of Racial and Ethnic Diversity Grant funds projects that recruit, retain or enhance the training of ethnic-minority graduate psychology students. Apply by Dec. 3.

$1,000 for psychological science research

The Basic Psychological Science Research Grant supports graduate students conducting psychological science research studies. Students in all fields of psychology and neuroscience are eligible. Apply by Dec. 3.

$500 for promoting science appreciation

Graduate students are encouraged to apply for the $500 APAGS Teaching Excellence in Psychological Science Awards, which recognize graduate students who promote science appreciation among undergraduate students. Apply by Dec. 3.

$500 for outstanding educational psychology dissertation

APA's Division 15 (Educational) presents the Paul R. Pintrich Dissertation Award for an outstanding dissertation on educational psychology. The recipient receives $500, a plaque and the opportunity to present his or her research at APA's 2015 Annual Convention in Toronto, Aug. 6-9. Apply by Dec. 31. Contact April Taylor with questions.

Run for an APAGS position

APAGS encourages graduate students to run for an elected position on the APAGS committee for terms that will begin next August. Applications are being accepted for two member-at-large positions — communications focus and education focus — and chair-elect. The application deadline is Jan. 12. The elections committee will review applications and slate eligible candidates before voting is open to APAGS membership. Apply for the Graduate Student Ethics Award

APA's Ethics Committee and APAGS invite students to submit their theoretical or empirical papers on psychology and ethics for the Graduate Student Ethics Award. Papers will be judged on their originality, clarity and the quality of their literature review. The winner will receive $1,000, a round-trip ticket to APA's 2015 Annual Convention in Toronto, Aug. 6-9, three nights of hotel accommodation and convention registration. Apply by Jan. 2.

Recognize a student-friendly psychological association

If your state, provincial or territorial psychological association fosters graduate student involvement, nominate it for the $1,500 APAGS/Committee for the Advancement of Professional Practice/Division 31 (State, Provincial and Territorial Psychological Association Affairs) Award. Nominations must include a cover letter, a list of the association's student programming and a description of the association's goals for engaging student members. Nominations are due Jan. 12. Submit applications electronically.

Share your work in criminal justice

The Criminal Justice Section of APA's Division 18opens in new window (Psychologists in Public Service) encourages students to present at its Third North American Correctional and Criminal Justice Psychology Conferenceopens in new window, "Psychology Getting Smart on Crime" in Ottawa, Ontario, June 4-6. Prizes will be given for the best graduate and undergraduate student posters. The call for papers submission portal is open through Dec. 1. Apply for counseling psychology awards

Student Affiliates of Seventeen (SAS), the student division of APA's Div. 17opens in new window (Society of Counseling Psychology) seeks nominations for three graduate student awards:

  • Travel Award: This $500 prize covers an SAS member's expenses to attend the 2015 APA Annual Convention in Toronto, or another conference related to the field of counseling psychology.
  • Social Justice Award: This $500 prize recognizes a counseling psychology doctoral student who exemplifies commitment to social justice though practice, research or professional service in the field.
  • Research Award: This $500 prize recognizes outstanding graduate student research.

Submit a video for Division 27 contest

Students are encouraged to apply for the annual Society for Community Research and Action Video Contest, which seeks to bring community work to life through video. Videos must be posted on YouTube, Vimeo or a similar website. Applicants must be members of the society (APA's Division 27opens in new window), but the videos may be made in collaboration with community groups and other organizations. The contest deadline is Dec. 1.

Nomination letters should include details about the location, activities and video participants, recommended search terms and keywords and other relevant links that could help the society increase traffic to the video. Letters should also describe the link between the video content and community psychology values, principles and approaches, and the likelihood of the video to generate interest and traffic across a wide range of potential online audiences.

Repay your loan debt through research

Psychologists are eligible to apply for the National Institutes of Health Loan Repayment Program, which offers up to $70,000 in educational debt repayment for researchers willing to spend two years conducting research funded by a nonprofit organization or by a U.S. federal, state or local government entity. APAGS presented 12 awards at APA's Annual Convention in Washington, D.C., this summer. They are:
