In this fireside chat, Kumar Garg, a senior advisor for science and technology in the Obama Administration and now a senior director at Schmidt Futures, and Russ Shilling, chief scientific officer at APA, discuss why science and technology should be playing a larger role in helping us address our core societal challenges. The conversation covers a range of issues, from the need for research funding that more deeply integrates the social and behavioral sciences, to harnessing and managing the deluge of data that our digital lives are creating, to the critical role that a range of players — from government, to industry, to research institutions, to the general public — must play in shaping our future.

This talk was featured at APA's 2019 Technology, Mind and Society conferenceopens in new window in Washington, D.C. The conference provides a venue for reporting and assessing current efforts to understand and shape the interactions of human beings and technology, identifying priorities for future work, and promoting exchange and collaboration among participants.
