APA Books releases ‘College Teaching' this month

A new APA book brings together the best research on teaching and learning for college-level instructors. "College Teaching: Practical Insights from the Science of Teaching and Learning," draws on theory and research in psychology to offer insights for professors on the key aspects of college-level teaching, including student engagement, lecturing, classroom management, using technology effectively and course evaluation.

"For those who are new to teaching, the book — organized so that topics are covered in the order they gain our attention during the course of the semester — provides a guide to follow from the semester's start to its very end," says author Donelson R. Forsyth, PhD, of the University of Richmond. Forsyth has taught for 38 years as a professor of such courses as introductory psychology, educational psychology, environmental psychology, social psychology, group dynamics, research methods, internship, theories and models of leadership, and ethics. Psychology & Neuroscience joins APA journals

APA is now publishing the quarterly, online-only journal Psychology & Neuroscience , a publication of the Brazilian Institute of Neuropsychology and Behavior that features peer-reviewed papers on the intersection of psychology and neuroscience from all over the world. The journal has five sections: psychophysics and perception; plasticity and neural development; clinical and experimental neuropsychology; behavior, systems and cognition; and neuropsychopharmacology. The editors are J. Landeira-Fernandez, PhD, a professor of psychology at Pontifical Catholic University in Rio de Janeiro; A. Pedro de Mello Cruz, PhD, an associate professor of psychology at the University of Brasilia; and Dora Fix Ventura, PhD, a professor of psychology at the University of Sao Paulo. APA to publish Practice Innovations in 2016

In March, APA will debut Practice Innovations , a new journal for clinical, practical and research articles on current and evolving approaches in professional mental health practice. Steven Walfish, PhD, is the inaugural editor of the journal, which is owned by Div. 42 (Psychologists in Independent Practice).

"Our goal is to help improve practice," says Walfish, a founding partner of The Practice Institute in Atlanta and a clinical assistant professor in the department of psychiatry and behavioral sciences of the Emory University School of Medicine.

The journal's editors are seeking manuscripts on clinicians' inventive work in addition to research that shows how psychologists are taking their insights "out of the laboratory and into clinicians' toolboxes," Walfish says.

"We know from research that clinicians want to read about and learn from research studies, but they have not been willing to go to traditional publication outlets for this information as papers are typically written with other academics in mind," he adds. "So, if researchers can successfully translate their work into clinically applicable information for practitioners to read, I think there will be a demand for the articles."

APA primer on college mental health encourages healthier, safer campuses

A free APA publication, "A Strategic Primer on College Student Mental Health," aims to increase awareness among academic institutions of the critical need to support college students' mental health needs.

Stress, anxiety, depression and substance abuse can impair learning, weaken creativity and reduce interest in new experiences and ideas, the authors emphasize. The primer addresses common myths about student mental health, the important role of the campus counseling center services and the need for a better "web of caring services" to spot and help students in distress.

"Mental and behavioral health problems are also learning problems," says co-author Louise Douce, PhD, a member of APA's Board of Directors who chaired The Ohio State University's crisis support team for 25 years.

"Given the complex relationships among mental health, problematic health behaviors, learning, campus safety and the quality of the learning environment, mental and behavioral health should be a strategic priority on every campus," says Douce.

APA co-published the guide with Student Affairs Administrators in Higher Education and the American Council on Education.

CPJ to feature international coaching in December

Consulting Psychology Journal will publish a special issue on "International Perspectives in Coaching Psychology" in December, guest edited by former Div. 13 (Society of Consulting Psychology) president Vicki Vandaveer, PhD, and Stephen Palmer, PhD, founding director of the Centre for Coaching in London.

"The papers line up around two themes — becoming and sharpening your skills as a coach and the coaching process itself," says CPJ editor Robert Kaiser, PhD, president of Kaiser Leadership Solutions in Greensboro, North Carolina.

Highlights include papers on competencies required to be a good coach, how coaches develop expertise, and the care and keeping of oneself as an instrument of change. Other papers include a summary of a decade-long research program showing the positive benefits of coaching and a case study that illustrates how different theoretical orientations provide unique views on the issues and lead to complementary coaching interventions and techniques.

"Together the papers emphasize a common core to coaching around the world, but also bring to light subtle differences," says Kaiser. "For instance, you can see the influence of depth psychology among the Europeans, and a pragmatic emphasis among the more behaviorist-oriented Americans."For more information on CPJ, go to CPJ online .

Magination Press's 'Ouch! Moments' tackles micro-aggressions

A new APA children's book teaches children how harmful such comments as "He's so gay" or "Move over, Fatso" can be. "Ouch! Moments," released last month and written by clinical psychologist Michael Genhart, PhD, offers children practical strategies on how to help others who experience insults or slights and empowers children to stand up to mean and hurtful language.

Psychologist Kevin L. Nadal, PhD, executive director of the Center for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer Studies at the Graduate Center, City University of New York, wrote the "Note to Parents and Caregivers" section, which offers research-based advice on how to help children who are either the target of or an enactor of micro-aggressions.
