Question 3

Over the years, many psychologists have left APA because of its lack of attentiveness to and support for psychological researchers. What plans do you have to address this situation?

The preamble to APA's Ethics Code states that "Psychologists are committed to increasing scientific and professional knowledge of behavior." The primary obligation of psychologists is scientific research and the application of scientific knowledge and inquiry. It is therefore imperative that we attract back researchers who either do not belong to APA, or who have left for other professional associations. We should offer these returning psychologists incentives to return to APA, such as reduced dues and opportunities to be involved in governance. I will also appoint a panel to specifically address and oversee this issue and make appropriate recommendations.

Question 4

What has been the most significant challenge you experienced as a leader, and how did you respond?

A significant challenge I have met as a leader was to create, implement, staff and supervise the first Psychological Services Section for the Arlington County Police Department. I accomplished this in part by drawing upon my leadership experience as a clinical psychologist and major in the United States Army Medical Service Corps, which included service at Walter Reed Army Medical Center and as chief of the Clinical Psychology Section of Fort Belvoir Community Hospital. It was a leadership challenge to bring together and coordinate police command and personnel services, county administrators and the officers of all ranks within the department.
