New system for consistency in health service psychology

APA has developed a Taxonomy for Education and Training in Professional Psychology Health Service Specialties and Subspecialties that lays out consistent terms and descriptions for the levels of education and training that doctoral, doctoral internship, postdoctoral, and post-licensure programs should use to describe their coursework in health service psychology. The taxonomy aims to resolve the use of inconsistent labels to describe training program offerings, which has caused confusion within the profession and for students who want to evaluate training program offerings beyond a program’s declared specialty. APA encourages training programs to adopt the taxonomy and use the terms exposure, experience, emphasis, and major area of study to describe their offerings within APA-recognized specialties.

For complete descriptions of each instruction level and information on how to apply the taxonomy to your training program, go to What is the taxonomy?
