Addressing the unique needs of students with disabilities

APA’s Coalition for Psychology in Schools and Education has published the “Top 20 Principles From Psychology for PreK–12 Teaching and Learning of Students With Disabilities,” which includes research explicit to special education and relevance to teachers working with students with disabilities. APA’s Top 20 Principles condense the most important psychological science on PreK–12 teaching and learning relevant to enhancing teaching, learning, and well-being in the classroom. The resource provides key insights into five areas of psychological functioning: thinking and learning, motivation, social-emotional learning, classroom management, and assessment of progress. Council approves revisions to undergraduate psychology guidelines

In August, APA’s Council of Representatives approved the revisions to the APA Guidelines for the Undergraduate Psychology Major (PDF, 1MB)opens in new window. The revision is titled Empowering People to Make a Difference in Their Lives and Communities and includes an emphasis on the scientific foundation of psychology and its broad application; greater attention to workforce preparation; consideration of global perspectives; elaborated expectations regarding ethical behavior across contexts; stronger representation of measurement, research methods, and statistics; and an infusion of equity, diversity, and inclusion across goal domains.

Attend Work, Stress, and Health in November

APA will host the biennial Work, Stress, and Health conference virtually on Nov. 8–11, along with the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health and the Society for Occupational Health Psychology. This year’s focus will be mental health in the workplace. Psychologists Amy Edmondson, PhD, of Harvard Business School, Marc Brackett, PhD, of the Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence, and Amisha Jah, PhD, of the University of Miami, will be featured on a panel on “Mindfulness, Psychological Safety, Emotional Well-being, and Safety in the Workplace.” The meeting will also cover ways to promote employee health and well-being, build sustainable organizations, and much more.
