Youth mental health: A new report on kids and social media
In April, APA released a new research report on youth and social media to inform the development of social media safety standards and policies to protect youth from social media harms. The report, Potential risks of content, features, and functions: A closer look at the science behind how social media affects youth, is a follow-up to last year’s health advisory on social media use in adolescence, which has been covered extensively in the media and helped ignite global conversation on the impact of social media on youth mental health and well-being. Among the key points, the new report identifies features of social media—such as infinite scroll and push notifications—that pose significant challenges for young people in managing or curtailing their use of social media. The report also outlines science-backed potential solutions and policies to protect youth.
APA Chief Science Officer Mitch Prinstein, PhD, will speak about the new report, the health advisory, and more as part of a panel on kids and social media at the Aspen Ideas Festivalopens in new window on June 28.
