A case to watch

Is talk therapy speech or conduct?

In an 8-1 decision, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that Colorado’s law banning “conversion therapy” on minors may violate mental health professionals’ First Amendment right to freedom of speech. APA is deeply concerned by this ruling. Prior to the hearing, APA filed an amicus brief in the case, Chiles v. Salazar, et al., presenting the court with the scientific evidence that “conversion therapy” is unethical and ineffective, and therefore not a legitimate therapeutic practice. For more information, see "APA concerned about far-reaching consequences from Supreme Court decision regarding therapy as ‘free speech’".

Essential listening

What goes viral and why?

In this Speaking of Psychology podcast episode, Jonah Berger, PhD, discusses why some ideas, products, news stories, and trends spread like wildfire while others disappear. The science of what catches on and the psychological forces that drive word of mouth, including social currency and high-arousal emotions like awe and anger, are key to understanding this phenomenon. Berger also touches on what his research can tell us about the spread of misinformation. Listen to this and other episodes online.
