Michael Sullivan, PhD, assistant executive director of state advocacy at APA, says psychologists can boost their involvement in state advocacy in several ways:

  • Join a state association; they are psychology's voice in the state capitals.

  • Sign up for legislative days or grassroots networks where psychologists are urged to send e-mails, write letters to or call legislators, or make in-person visits to representatives.

  • Become active on a state legislative committee or task force.

  • Work on state legislators' campaigns.

  • Run for public office.
