Featured Psychologist

Edward Delgado-Romero, PhD Edward Delgado-Romero, PhD, is a professor in the department of counseling and human development services at the College of Education of the University of Georgia, in Athens. He is the graduate coordinator for the department and serves on the graduate council of the university. He is also a licensed psychologist in Georgia.

Delgado-Romero's parents were both immigrants to the United States from Colombia. He attended Rhodes College in Memphis, Tenn. for his undergraduate degree in psychology and received his doctorate at the University of Notre Dame after completing his predoctoral internship at Michigan State University, in East Lansing. He has previously worked at the University of Florida, in Gainseville and Indiana University, in Bloomington.

Delgado-Romero is a fellow of the American Psychological Association through Div. 45 (Society for the Psychological Study of Culture, Ethnicity and Race) and Div. 17 (Society of Counseling Psychology). He is a founder and past-president of the National Latina/o Psychological Association. In 2011, he was awarded the Early Career Award for Psychology in the Public Interest by APA and in 2013 he received the Distinguished Career Contributions to Research Award from Div. 45.

Delgado-Romero has served on several national and international editorial boards and is currently an associate editor of the Journal of Latina/o Psychology. He has written extensively in the field of counseling psychology and in multicultural psychology, specifically Latina/o psychology. His most recent publication is a co-authored book with his mentor Patricia Arredondo, EdD, "Culturally-Responsive Counseling with Latinas/os" (Arredondo, Gallardo-Cooper, Delgado-Romero, & Zapata, 2014). Delgado-Romero's recent publications include a major contribution to The Counseling Psychologist on the Ethnic Minority Psychological Associations (Delgado-Romero, E. A., Forrest, L., & Lau, M., 2012).

Delgado-Romero enjoys mentoring graduate students and has actively presented and written with his advisees. His research team, BIEN!opens in new window is a collaborative effort to fuse research and service. Delgado-Romero emphasizes the need for psychological research to "give back" to ethnic-minority and immigrant populations. Ongoing research projects by BIEN! members include Cristalis Capielo, "The role of values acculturation, perceived ethnic discrimination, skin color and neighborhood composition on the behavioral acculturation of Central Florida Puerto Ricans" (Cristalis Capielo), "Acculturative Stress, Cultural Values and Indicators of Wellness in Latino/a Adolescents" (Bailey Nevels, PhD) and "Sexual Health Among Black Men of Caribbean Descent" (Candice Crowell). The BIEN! team and alumni are culturally competent researchers and their training is his focus.

Delgado-Romero is a father of five. His household is a happily blended family consisting of Colombian/Greek/Irish/Dutch/Chinese heritage. Along with his wife Angie, life is never boring with the crew of Javier, Isa, Nick, Emma and Gil.
